Christmas Financial Preparation

Posted Friday, August 6th, 2010

Christmas financial preparation can never be set too early. Although Christmas is a few months away, it is always best to start planning for it as early as possible. Some people begin their financial preparation for Christmas as early as a year; others begin theirs at the start of the New Year. However, it is all too common for the vast majority of us to begin planning how we’ll be spending for the Christmas season when it is right round the corner.

Christmas is a time for celebration, and also a time for the family. If you know you are going to be giving gifts to your family, friends, and possibly co-workers, you should aim to have enough expenses allocated for your gifts so you do not put yourself in a financial stranglehold. There are several ways you can prepare for your Christmas expenses now…

Establish an estimate of who you’ll be spending on – some people may find this to be a little tricky as you can develop a close relationship with someone new before the Christmas season and want to get that person a present. The though process however, is to create an estimate of the sum total of how much you’ll need to have saved up.

It will help if you made a note of how much you spent last year, and take into account inflation to give you a rough estimate. You should also determine whether you spent appropriately the year before. If you spent feverously last year, make a mental note of this and how you will avoid doing so this year.

Prepare Your Budget – once you have your estimate in place, you can then go ahead and prepare a budget. When doing this, take into account that there are only a few months until Christmas, which means you have even less time to save up and purchase your presents.

Remember, financial preparation requires that you make plans under the assumption that you will be purchasing items at full price. This obviously contradicts the fact that there will be a variety of discounts available during the Christmas season. However, it is not a guarantee that the items you want will be discounted. You should never make financial plans based on possible discount prices.

Making financial plans for your Christmas spending may seem like a lot of work for a short period, but the important aspect in doing so is making a start! So do not put off the planning any further. Make a start today!
